With the new year ahead, now is the perfect time to do a visual communications audit on your facility.
Entering the 4th quarter of the year, and looking ahead at 2020, it is time to assess/audit your physical signage. Your signage is your brand and it is often disregarded as a critical component in telling your story. These sign elements are how prospective customers and repeat customers assess you. Whether it is the sign on the outside of your building, or interior signage marketing your offerings, your signage is important in setting a tone, a vision and communicating a message to those who interact with you and your company. Often, signage is not in sync with your marketing message, creative, colors etc.
It is a good idea to schedule a bit of time to tour your property and do a visual communication audit through the eyes of a customer, and an employee:
• General- are the signs outside and inside my facility in good shape, clean, well lit (if they are to see at night)? Are they compelling?
• Exterior Signage- Is the physical signage on the exterior of the building the same as what is used in digital properties? Have we changed branding and is it harmonious? If window graphics are used, are the messages consistent with what you want to promote and share with prospective customers, customers, and employees?
• Interior signage- are the signs on the inside of the facility what you want to share with customers, and employees? Are they current? Could you sharpen the message, update promotional materials, and perhaps create more relevant messaging for your employees? As customers visit our offices, is the branding and signage compelling? Are you effectively using all surfaces including windows, walls, ceiling and floors to market your message?
• Fleet/vehicle graphics- do your vehicles have the right branding and messaging? Do the graphics grab attention? Are they consistent with other marketing elements? Do they reference current methods to reach you (through websites, social and phone numbers?) Are they legally compliant (license numbers as an example)?
• Trade show graphics are generally used for many years before being replaced. They are often the most out of sync with offline marketing elements, as well as digital properties. Does my trade booth (including all elements) look sharp? Is the message aligned on my trade show booth?
Your visual communication elements, including Exterior and Interior signage, fleet and trade show materials all impact your branding and what people think about your company. Taking the time to assess and audit what prospective customers, existing customers, and employees see as they visit your location will help you determine what is important to update.
