Effective planning can take a restaurant to new heights

Restaurants don’t succeed or fail only based on the quality of food and service they provide. While this might seem like the case, good food and service are only part of the equation to succeed in the ultra-competitive food service industry.

While many restaurateurs are experts in their field and can create fantastic culinary creations, some of them don’t have a background in the business world and as a result their businesses struggle or fail.

Luckily, there is help available for restaurant owners who are fantastic culinary experts but need some help on the business side. Strategic planning involves examining the business itself as well as the external factors which can impact the business, and then using this analysis along with the company goals to make plans for the future.

When working with my restaurant clients, one of the most useful tools for strategic planning is known as a SWOT analysis. This is an acronym which stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It’s an ideal way to assess the company (strengths and weaknesses) and its environment (opportunities and threats), which can help the business owner understand which steps to take next in their business’s development.

By making a plan which will capitalize on strengths, shore up weaknesses, take advantage of opportunities and safeguard against threats, a restaurant owner can take solace in knowing their bases are covered, and have clear direction for their business.
