Local Landscapers Discuss Easy To Grow Plants

In the summer months, many landscape duties in Southwest Florida fall by the wayside. Whether the homeowner has returned to a Northern state for the warmer months of the year or it’s just too hot for them to perform regular maintenance, it’s advantageous to select low maintenance plants which can thrive on their own.

Luckily, our climate and native flora lend themselves to being low maintenance in many cases. There are several plants which can thrive in the salty soil, plentiful sun and summer downpours we often get in Fort Myers and the surrounding areas.

As a full service landscape company, we have learned over the years which plants require little maintenance and can recommend those to our clients who plan to be gone for long periods of time, or who have little desire to spend every Saturday working in their yards. We have a team of expert designers, installers and a maintenance crew who serve many families in Southwest Florida, and we would love to be your go-to landscaper as well.

Below you will find a few examples of low maintenance plants which thrive in our area. Our goal here is to make your life easier by providing viable options for your outdoor spaces which look great and require little effort. Each of the plants below should remain healthy and beautiful, even if they are only getting Florida sunshine and a little water from an irrigation system or plentiful rain.

Agave

If you want to dive right into Florida landscaping and like the way they look, Agave plants can be beautiful when integrated into a landscape design and they are resistant to drought, thrive in salty soil and come in a variety of types. These plants are very unique, and we do understand they aren’t for every style, but in time they produce beautiful flowers and their leaf type and color can vary based on the species. Yucca is a similarly-tough plant type, like Agave but with a short trunk. Either plant is a good, low maintenance choice.

Boxwoods

Boxwoods can thrive in South Florida’s climate and they are the ideal low maintenance plant because they grow relatively slowly. When selecting any low maintenance plant, a slow rate of growth is key because if it grows too quickly then trimming becomes an issue. We included boxwoods here because of their sturdiness and versatility, as they can be used in many different landscaping applications.

Palm Trees

An obvious but necessary inclusion to this list, palm trees are versatile, sturdy and low maintenance. While people immediately think of tall, thin trees, palms come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, and you can find palms to act as accent trees, center pieces to a landscape design or to serve any number of yard functions. There are many types of palms, and a professional can help you select the ideal type for your space.

These are just a few examples of low maintenance plants which will have you spending less time worrying about your outdoor areas. If you need any type of landscape assistance, our team is ready to help. Give us a call today to get started!
