Once you’ve approved the new design plans and sign off on the contract, the real work will begin. On our end we will be buying plants, preparing our timeline and planting plans, but there are some things you need to do to prepare for this time-consuming and messy project. Taking these early steps will make everything easier for your family and our landscaping crew. After all, we all want to ensure this creative endeavor is completed on time and within budget. Once we’ve given you a solid starting date for the project, you should start following this plan, which begins up to 2 weeks before any digging is done.
Cease All Lawn Treatments
At least two weeks before we begin your landscape installation, we request that you discontinue all lawn treatments at your home. Our landscape crew spends a lot of time down on the ground digging through the soil and handling your plants during both the excavation process and installation. Fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides all contain poisons that are harmful to our crew. These products take at least two weeks to break down and be washed away by rain or your irrigation system, making them less harmful for us.
Mark All Underground Utilities and Irrigation Systems
The main plumbing and sewage lines are typically installed far enough underground here in Southwest Florida to not interfere with the work we need to do. However, that’s not necessarily true for internet or cable lines and phone lines, which are often not encased in a protective pipe and are installed only a few inches under the ground. Irrigation systems are also a hazard. Installing new plants requires digging and we don’t want to pierce or break any of your important utility lines. You should either mark them yourself, if you know where everything is, or one week prior to landscape installation, ask your utility companies to come out and mark your yard with flags letting us know where everything is located. It’s typically a free service, but you must ask them in a timely manner.
Clear Up, Clean Up, Pack Up
It is important that you remove all obstacles from the areas of your yard designated to be landscaped. You may have bird baths, fountains, playground equipment or large potted plants, and especially if these things are personally valuable to you, you’ll want to be sure to put them in a safe spot until they can be reinstalled. Get rid of anything that won’t be part of the new design. If you cannot move it or don’t have a safe spot to store it, let our crew know to take extra care with those items. When our crew gets clear access to a work area, we are able to complete your project quicker.
