The Benefits of Adding Water Features Into Your Southwest Landscape

Serving Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Estero, Bonita Springs, Alva, Naples, Florida

The Benefits of Adding Water Features to Your LandscapeAnyone who has been to Las Vegas will tell you how exciting it was to see the gorgeous fountain display at the Bellagio. Visitors to Rome throw coins into Trevi Fountain in hopes of someday coming back to its beautiful waters. For centuries human beings have been attracted to water, whether it be the beach, a waterfall, a river or yes, a fountain. We’ve written love poems, books and songs in honor of these beautiful running waters that fill our souls with happiness and peace. At Peer Landscaping of Fort Myers, FL , we love building beautiful water features for our client’s Southwest Florida landscapes. There are many benefits beyond the obvious curb appeal a beautiful fountain, pond, waterfall, water wall, scupper or rain curtain can provide to your yard. So over the next few weeks we will tell you all about those benefits, as well as the different ways we can incorporate a water feature into your landscape.

Water features make you feel better and the science behind it

Indulge us, and just for a minute, let’s pretend we’re in science class. Remember atoms? They’re made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Electrons swirl around the nucleus where the protons and neutrons are located. When there are more electrons swirling around than there are protons in the middle, the atom becomes a negatively charged ion. Why are the folks at Peer Landscaping teaching me about ions, you ask? Because negative ions have been shown to improve your mood, decrease depression and improve your overall energy. Essentially, negative ions help increase the amount of blood that reaches your brain, which improves your alertness and mental energy. Some people even call them the vitamins of the air since they have such significant health benefits. And guess what generates negative ions? Flowing water. The energy of flowing or falling water splits neutral particles in the air. This action frees up electrons to attach to other air molecules, resulting in negative ions. If this sounds like a bunch of hooey, rest assured it’s not. You can find lots of peer-reviewed studies that show the link between mood and the presence of negative ions.

Relaxation and rejuvenation

Thanks for going down that little scientific detour with us. We think it was necessary to explain the “why” behind the benefits of water features. Even if you don’t buy into the power of negative ions, water has clear emotional health benefits. The simple presence of flowing water improves your mental state and increases focus and concentration.

The sound of water has positive effects on our mental health. Water sounds have long been used during meditation to give our minds a soothing atmosphere. Scientific studies also suggest the rhythm of ocean waves affects the rhythm of the neuronal activities in our brains. That encourages slower, less frenzied thoughts.

There’s no doubt flowing water serves as white noise. Not only does the sound mask unwelcomed noises from busy streets, barking dogs and loud neighbors, but it helps you relax and focus. By blocking out other sounds, white noise allows you to shut out the rest of the world. It’s a great way to reduce stress and free your mind to just let go for a while.

We’d love to show you more of what we can do to transform your landscape into a peaceful and healthy outdoor living space for you and your family to enjoy for years to come.
