Landscape Design for Small SpacesIf you live in a garden apartment or townhouse, you may have skipped landscaping your yard because of its size.  In this article, the landscape design experts at Peer Landscaping of Southwest Florida are going to tell you some important reasons landscaping even small spaces can be beneficial to your curb appeal.

First, if you’ve got a small yard, let’s talk about ending your lawn love affair. Did you know that here in the U.S. we expend nearly 3 trillion gallons of water and 2.4 million metric tons of fertilizer just making our lawns green? Here in Southwest Florida we’ve unfortunately been feeling the effects of everyone’s love affair with having a green lawn. All that fertilizer and pesticide we put on our lawns gets washed away into our water systems and is a major cause of the red tide and blue green algae issue we’ve been having in our rivers, canals and waterways here. Let us put in mulch and flowerbeds to eliminate some of the lawn you’ve got, and thus eliminate the amount of water and fertilizer you use.

If you have moved here from the North, you may be used to lush green expanses of grass. However, turf grass provides no habitat for pollinators or other animals and plants that make up a diverse and healthy ecosystem. We can help you make your yard Florida friendly by landscaping it with native plants, shrubs and flowers that will attract birds, bees, and butterflies that help the environment and look beautiful too!

If you have a small yard, we can create the illusion of more space simply through our landscape design! By creating curving pathways of flowers that wound themselves around important focal points like planters or decorative vases, your front lawn looks larger than it actually is!  One of the most important ways we can help create the illusion of more space within a small yard is by landscaping in layers to create depth. This means planting the shortest plants in front and the tallest plants at the back or perhaps in the center to create a focal point.

Another way we love to make a smaller yard look larger is by creating visual vignettes of colorful flowers or plants. Areas that can be restful little nooks for sitting and reading or watching the sunset. These intimate outdoor spaces will have you outside enjoying our tropical weather and will make your land space appear larger.

If you have a small yard with just one or two large trees in it, we can take advantage of those trees to create a whole new look for your landscape! Our brutal sun here in SWFL means that we have to be careful where we place shade loving plants. But your single tree in the front yard can provide exactly what those plants need. We will dig out an area beneath it, plant some shade loving plants and put some mulch in and now you have a central focal point of beauty in your front yard!

Our tropical climate affords us the opportunity to use such a wonderful variety of plants and trees here in Florida! Even if your yard is small, there are lots of varieties of small and medium sized palm trees just perfect for lining paths or using in small spaces!

A small garden area is no excuse for not landscaping it. We love the challenge of creating beauty even in small spaces. We will look to use lot of different textures through a mix of plants, ground cover, foliage, different kinds and colors of mulch and wood chips. All of this together will create an inviting space for you to enjoy! Call Bailey or Katie at Peer Landscaping to start your dream landscaping project, 239.645.6455.
