Well Planned Landscape Design is Our ForteAt Peer Landscaping, a premier luxury landscape design company in Southwest Florida, we are excited to share some insights into some of the things we take into consideration when we design and install your new landscape.

An eye for detail is a must when designing a landscape. We follow two rules when arranging plants in beds. The first is that we space out the individual plants so that they touch each other when they reach their mature size. The second is that we overlap the masses of plants and connect them so that they flow without space between them when they are full size. This creates a cohesive composition that’s pleasing to the eye without looking like a jungle.

Perspective is important in design. No matter the size of your yard, we can create an illusion of depth and distance by the way we create lines of perspective with plantings in flower beds, entryways, and walkways. Creating a design with the proper proportions requires an eye for design and a lot of preplanning. We love brainstorming these kinds of design solutions to give you the yard you’ve been dreaming of.

As human beings we are naturally drawn to patterns and to symmetry. When organized deliberately, they provide us with a sense of peace and harmony. One of the most important patterns we create in landscape design is by planting in layers that occur vertically with variations in height, and horizontally with plant masses that lay along the ground plane. This is typically the first part of our design thought process.

Most plant compositions are viewed from the vantage point of having the foreground plants and ground layer closest to the viewer and the background plants farthest away. That’s why we start out by visualizing the background or tallest layer first and working our way forward to what will be planted in the foreground. So visualize this, low lying plants that are short will be in the foreground with plants getting taller and taller as we move toward the back of the garden. This allows you to easily see everything clearly, and it tends to work well in terms of how much sun the plants need as well.

One thing we take into consideration is the use of native plants. Our climate here in Southwest Florida allows most plants to grow and thrive, including a lot of invasive species from tropical climates around the world. We avoid those plants because they are not good for the plants that are native to our environment here in Florida. We believe that staying true to the plants that have always thrived here provides a more beneficial garden for local animals, insects and other native foliage.
