“As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way”….if you are a Seinfeld or “Festivus” fan that line should sound familiar. Often we continue to attack the same problem the same way over and over hoping for a different result. Isn’t that the popular definition of insanity?
When it came to my allergies, that was the approach. Here is an allergy shot. The result will be the same (you will still suffer) but here it is anyway. I did that as a kid for five years. On top of it, we tried various oral medications and nose sprays. At the end of the day, I still suffered daily from a stuffed up nose, painful sinuses, migraines, and worst of all severe fatigue.
As I got older I stayed on the insanity path and took Benadryl and a host of other things with the same result—I still had bad allergies.
The problem was, we were all looking at it the wrong way. First off, what is an allergic reaction? It is when your body recognizes an outside substance as harmful. Your immune system goes into combat mode and attacks. When it is a virus or harmful bacteria that is what we want. When it is something that isn’t harmful we call it an allergy.
The issue is, the body isn’t adapting to its environment as it was created to do, and certainly my body wasn’t adapting. Seasons would change, it would rebel and I would be miserable. I was on that cycle my whole life until I finally decided that I needed a different approach. Enter upper cervical chiropractic, the day my life and my allergies changed.
The purpose of chiropractic is to keep the spine healthy. Since the spine houses and protects the spinal cord, a misalignment (especially in the upper neck) can lead to a series of events that can interfere with the proper communication of the nervous system. The nervous system has a big impact on the immune system so, poor or incorrect information being exchanged can cause an outside substance to be recognized as harmful, and an allergic response kicks in. Once corrected, the nervous system is usually able to send the right information, the immune system behaves, and allergic responses stop occurring.
After my upper cervical adjustment, I noticed it was easier to breath and my sinuses were less stuffed up. Within a few weeks, my fatigue was improved, and after a few months, my allergies were 90% gone. I may get the occasional day of mild sinus pressure a few times a year now, but it has no impact on my life and is very temporary.
