Fort Mill, SC – Basement Flooded? Call for Dryout Services for Carpets & Floors

Did you know that your flooded basement carpet is not always salvageable? Read on to learn how you can protect it from water damage.

Basements are most vulnerable to floods during rainfalls, storms, hurricanes and water leakages. During such disasters, external drains redirect the floodwater toward houses, which results in flooded basements. When this happens, your basement carpet  and other belongings also suffer from water damage.Carpet

To salvage your carpet from serious water damage, you will need to dry it as soon as possible. If you wait for more than 48 hours, the carpet may be affected by contaminated water, fueling mold growth. Here are some steps to dry a flooded basement carpet:

Step 1: Shift the Furniture

Before you begin with the drying process, you will need to move the furniture from the carpet. You need to do this immediately because leaving it that way will damage both the furniture and the carpet.

Step 2: Remove the Water

The next step is to get rid of the floodwater both from the carpet and the floor underneath. One way is to rent a hot water extraction unit from a local carpet cleaning company. Alternatively, a vacuum designed to remove water should be of great help. Keep extracting water until all the water has dried.

Keep in mind that this vacuum is different from regular vacuum cleaners, which can’t normally handle water. Whatever you use though, be sure to remove water from the carpet padding as well as from the floor.

Step 3: Lift the Carpet up From the Floor

Starting from one corner, lift the carpet off the padding and the floor with the help of rubber gloves and pliers. Don’t cut the carpet in an attempt to separate it from the floor because this will make it extremely difficult to place it back together. Simply pull it off from the installation strips from one of the corners or sides. Fold it off completely to get to the padding.

Step 4: Dry the Carpet

In the case of minor flooding, i.e., when the subfloor looks dry and the padding is slightly damp, you don’t need to separate the carpet from the padding to dry it. A quick way to dry the carpet is to use a dehumidifier that can be rented from a local company too.

Use a chair or similar fixture to lift up the carpet from one end and blow air on the pad. To speed up the drying process, open the windows and turn up the heat.

Step 5: Seek Professional Help

If any portion of the carpet, padding, the surrounding furniture or walls seem to be damaged by contaminated water, or you see mold growth somewhere, reach out to a reliable water damage restoration company to salvage your belongings. Look for a company that also assists in drying the basement carpet.
