Are you concerned about your family’s health? Improving indoor air quality can help.

Vehicle emissions, industrial gases, and pollution from waste are enough to convince you to stay at home. But what if your indoor air quality is also very poor? Believe it or not, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reveals that the indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the outdoor air.Mold

Yet, it doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. Here are some tips to improve the indoor air quality at home:

Regular Cleaning

Cleaning the floors, furniture and other surfaces in your home regularly goes a long way to improve the quality of air. This can’t be stressed enough, especially for those who have carpets or rugs at home. Without maintaining hygiene, allergens can easily accumulate on floors and surfaces, harming the air quality above them. Regardless of the type of floor you have, mop it on a daily basis and do away with the pollutants by using a vacuum with a HEPA filter. If you alone and can’t commit to regular cleaning, hire a cleaner to do the job for you.

Apply the Right Paint

Inspect the paint or coating on the walls at home. Certain types of paint release harmful chemicals that may cause dizziness or even cause a person to faint. Consider replacing the coating with a paint labeled “Low VOC” or “Zero VOC” that’s known to cut down on pollutants.

Attach “No Smoking” Signs at Home

While this can be easily ignored, smoking is often the major cause of poor indoor air quality at homes. You must have heard about the risks to passive smokers. Smokers are not the only ones under threat, but the released substances also put others at risk of developing cancer and asthma. Hence, if one or more of your guests have a smoking habit, tell them to use an outdoor setting for smoking.

Prevent Mold Growth

Some areas in your home such as the kitchen and washrooms are constantly under threat from mold or mildew growth. This is mainly a result of exposure to moisture. The problem with mold is that mold spores rise into the air and spread to different areas at home. They are enough to pollute the environment at home, putting the residents under serious risk. Mold spores can result in sore throat, wheezing, headaches, watery eyes, and skin rashes.

Depending on the type of mold present, the threats can be even more dangerous. Hence, one effective way to improve indoor air quality is to prevent the chances of mold growth by managing the humidity levels in high-risk areas of your home. For instance, simply switching on the exhaust fan after a bath can help dry the surfaces and get rid of moisture.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

Proper air ventilation at home helps eliminate allergens and harmful pollutants. Keep the windows open to let the fresh air enter your home from time to time.

In summary, improving indoor air quality makes your home a healthier place to live in.
