Hi, I'm Jim Schueren. I'm a FocalPoint business and executive coach. I work primarily with Aerospace and defense companies as well as veteran-owned businesses. To help those leaders, those owners, to be better at their jobs to solve the challenges that they have in their companies and essentially to build their business and have more time doing it.
One of my favorite questions when I'm out meeting people is what are the biggest challenges you're facing today in your business. I get a lot of interesting answers, and I learned a lot about the people and about the companies they are involved with.
Recently, an owner who is a veteran and older with a small business turned to me and said, “ Jim, my biggest challenges of my employees. Some of them are really sharp; others, no matter how much detail I give, how much data, or how many drawings I do, I can draw the whole thing out. I give them a task and they can not get it right for the life of me. Sometimes, they do something really stupid, and at the end of the day, I go home. I am mentally and physically exhausted, I'm frustrated I don't know what to do.
I had to kinda keep from chuckling because reality is just about all of us feel that way. Whether you're an owner and executive or even at home, sometimes our communication just doesn't get through, and you get very frustrated. It's exhausting dealing with that.
The challenge is that everybody communicates differently. We all have our natural behavior styles and communication styles. How do we respond to others? What do we do? some people, for example, driven by data information, give me more give me more others could care less about data and information they operate off their gut feel, or they don’t care about the data. What they care about is the relationship. Do you have a relationship?
I'm sure we all know some people who are like that. One of those areas, I typically use a communication and behavioral assessment tool that allows the individual to learn about themselves first what is their style and understand what it means and how it can be perceived by others and then how to recognize different styles with different people if you recognize yourself you recognize how other people best communicate then you know how to communicate with them better
Communication can help with those employees, your peers, your partners or clients, your spouse, your family members, your friends, it doesn't matter. It gives you the tools to be a better communicator and thereby improve your leadership capabilities. People are far more willing and interested in following a leader that can communicate well.
