Rusts on concrete are never a merry or pleasing sight. They look very unattractive and ruin the entire image of the surroundings.

We are going to discuss some reasons why rust occurs in your concrete. Make sure you follow through and avoid them in order to protect your concrete.

If you just got a new concrete foundation laid for your garage or driveway, you might be worried about them rusting. This often happens as time passes, and the concrete foundations start to rust. So, while your worry is spot on, there are certain measures that you can take in order to protect your concrete from staining.

If you observe some reddish or brownish stains visible on your concrete, it is a sign that it is rusting. It will often be followed by cracks and can be quite an unpleasant situation. Here are some causes that cause rust.

If you notice that your concrete has brown or reddish stains on it, especially if there are cracks, then your concrete is rusting. Let’s figure out what causes this, as well as how to prevent this from occurring in the first place.

1. Soft Rock

When concrete is made, there are many hard rocks that are used to make them. Some hard rocks that are used are basal and limestone. Even granite is used to make concrete, but it is not that popular. So, a mixture of soft rocks and basalt and limestone is used in the mixture or the concrete. Certain rocks that have the tendency to absorb more water are termed mild. The concrete is porous ad allows the substance, but the iron rock would pop out as it absorbs moisture. Hence, when it is close to the surface, it can rust. For this purpose, you need to fill the holes and get the driveways repaired.

2. Fertilizers

If you have a garden or a gorgeous lawn next to your concrete, there is a possibility that you use fertilizers to strengthen your plants and help them in growing. If you do that, this can be a possibility of rust. The fertilizers have a lot of iron in them, and they can rust when it is merged with water or oxygen.

3. Hard Water

This does not happen commonly, but the hard water spewing from the garden hose or some random water from rain or stream can be hard. The hard water consists of minerals and also has a lot of iron in it. When it comes in contact with the air, it causes rust. If you observe the stains of rust after it rains or after you water the plants, check if it is the hard water that is causing it.

4. Materials of The Foundations

There are some structures that are built on red clay. This red clay has this particular color due to iron oxidation as the soil is enriched with a high level of iron. The iron here will be loosened and will escape the foundation. This will run on the surfaces of concrete and cause them to rust.
