Trust a Local Expert for Strategic Planning Needs
If you’re a financial advisor, there are many skills you must possess to serve your clients while also running a successful business. While many advisors have been trained extensively and have a great deal of expertise in financial matters, this doesn’t always mean they understand other elements of running a business. Instead of learning on the fly and suffering setbacks along the way, many advisors have found early and sustained success by partnering with a business coach.
As a business coach in the Detroit area, I have worked with businesses representing many industries over the years. After a long career in the corporate world, I found my passion in helping others succeed, and using my knowledge of business operations along with an owner’s passion and industry knowledge is often a winning combination.
In this article, I will focus on a specific area of my services which is helpful for financial advisors: strategic planning. Read on to learn more about strategic planning with the help of a business coach and how it can help your business thrive.
Understand Your Goals
Too many business owners go to work each day only thinking of what they must do in a given day or week to knock out their to-do list. Setting goals is key to strategic planning because if you have specific goals, you can create steps to achieve them. If you already have goals in place, my job as a coach is to understand them completely, so part of any initial consultation I have is to go over your goals and make them my own.
Improve Your Process
You might think of a strategic plan as an outward-facing guide for how to expand your business, and while seeking opportunities for external growth is certainly a component of planning, so is analyzing your business operations and taking steps toward improvement. Since I worked in the corporate world for many years, I look at each new client’s business with new, fresh, and experienced eyes. This new perspective often provides insight into how their processes can improve and they can become more efficient.
Grow Your Business
Growth looks different for many businesses, and this is another component where knowing your goals is key. Growth is relative, and ultimately is measured on your unique scale. For example, if your eventual goal is to grow your business enough to sell it and cash out, your definition of growth will look much different than a company who wants to exist in the long-term as a family-run business for generations. Either way, your plan should plan for your own vision of the future.
Track Your Success
Creating a plan is great, but you must stick to it. One way to do this is to create benchmarks along the way to success. As a business coach, I often have long term partnerships with my clients, and we regularly track how our plans are progressing and make adjustments when necessary.
