You can navigate financial goals and put family first

Married couples face unique challenges when planning for their financial future. They must plan differently than single people. Unfortunately, many couples aren’t on the same page about their finances, which causes conflicts in their marriage. Fortunately, following a few best practices can help couples work together toward shared goals and achieve financial freedom for their family.

I’m a financial adviser with Modern Woodmen of America. Im based right here in the Bay Area, and I’ve had the privilege of helping people at all stages of life achieve their financial goals.

Here are some effective financial strategies for couples:

  1. Get on the same page. When I meet with couples, spouses are often working in opposite directions toward different goals. It’s important to set a clear goal you can accomplish together.
  1. Hold each other accountable. Some spouses choose to have separate accounts. Couples who share funds can help each other make smart purchases by acting as a team.
  1. Take stock of your monthly expenses. Married couples are more likely to purchase a home, have children and make large purchases. It’s important to know where your money goes, then create a budget to ensure your expenses – including saving for college and other investments – are covered.
  1. Protect your future. Most couples only think about their checking, savings, retirement and investment accounts. Part of a solid financial plan, especially for spouses and families, involves life insurance to protect loved ones from the financial hardships of an unexpected death.
  1. Build your team. In addition to a financial professional, a good accountant can provide information about tax advantages to help you reach your goals. It’s important for married couples to have a clear goal, communicate and stay on course. When you stay on the same page, I can help you make the right moves through a combination of stocks, bonds, life insurance and more. I’d be honored to be your financial partner. Call me to discuss how I can help you reach your financial goals.
