Do you know the difference between mold and mildew? If you get confused between the two, keep reading.

If you often mistake mold for mildew, you aren’t alone. Both mold and mildew are types of fungi that need moisture to grow and survive. However, there are certain differences between the two, which you must know about. In the following paragraphs, we shall discuss some of the most common differences between mold and mildew growth.

So, let’s begin.

Differences in Appearances

Mold and mildew differ in appearance. As far as the color is concerned, mildew is whitish, yellowish, and grayish in color. Furthermore, mold grows on moist and warm surfaces. It is soft and fluffy when touched and can also be a little powdery. On the flipside, mold is blackish and greenish in color. Furthermore, it tends to grow in dark and damp areas. Furthermore, it is slimy and fuzzy in texture.

Where Do They Both Grow?

Mold and mildew both grow in moist and warm places. However, mildew can mostly be found in places that have damp surfaces. Mildew is mostly found on fabric and paper. Mildew also tends to grow on walls, ceilings and floors, especially in places that receive high humidity. Such areas include bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

Even though mold is also common in these areas, it is mostly found in the basement and the attic. Furthermore, mold growth can take place in garages and crawlspaces as well.

What Are the Effects of Mold and Mildew Exposure?

Both mold and mildew affect the surfaces and the people they come into contact with. For example, mildew can ruin the food it grows on, but it may not have such a severe impact upon your tiled walls and other surfaces like bathroom mirrors. Furthermore, inhalation of mildew spores can contribute to headaches and coughing.

On the flipside, the effects of mold can be a lot more severe. Mold can weaken the structure of your building and damage your health in a very major way. Exposure to mold can give you severe headaches, respiratory problems, nausea, body pain and joint pain. It can also cause numerous allergies, including skin allergy. Some of the common symptoms of mold exposure include runny eyes, sore throat and a stuffy nose.

How Difficult Is It to Get Rid of Mold and Mildew?

To get rid of mildew, all you need is a cleaning product or a detergent and a brush. However, mold removal is both difficult and dangerous. For thorough removal of mold, you may need professional help.
