BY: Kelly Mickley, STOP of Bridgeview

Has your toilet overflowed? Here are a few things you need to do.

All of us, at some point in time, have encountered an overflowing toilet. If you are currently dealing with an overflowing toilet, you must invest in thorough cleaning to get rid of harmful bacteria. In this article, we will discuss a few things you need to do to clean up after your toilet overflows.

Let’s break it down.

Stop the Flow of Water

To minimize the magnitude of damage, you should stop the flow of water. The best thing you can do is remove the lid of the tank. Now, push down on the rubber valve at the bottom, lift the valve, and shut down the valve promptly, even if the float needs to be released for a minute or two.

Mop Away the Water

It is a good thing if you can keep your cool and not panic. However, you mustn’t allow the dirty and contaminated water to pool in your bathroom and accumulate on the floor. Therefore, the water must be taken out as quickly as possible. Just get hold of a mop, and try to remove the water. By removing the water, you will minimize the likelihood of water damage and mold growth.

You can also remove the wastewater and collect it in a bucket. You can then flush the water down the toilet once you have unclogged it. If you do opt for this, make sure to mop the floor with hot water and a disinfectant afterward.

Start Plunging

One of the many must-have items in your bathroom is a plunger. If you don’t have one already, get one from the market immediately. After the flow of water is stopped, and the dirty water has been mopped, you have to unclog the toilet. In most cases, plunging the overflowing toilet is all you need to do to unclog it.

Bring In the Auger

In some cases, despite repeated attempts, the plunger fails to unclog your toilet. In such circumstances, you should get hold of an auger. To remove the clog, you should crank the auger to its utmost capacity in every direction. Then, remove the auger and start plunging again. If nothing seems to work, drop everything and call a professional.

Use Bleach

After you remove the water and unclog the toilet, you need to ensure that no harmful bacteria are left behind. To clean up the mess, mix water and bleach, and clean all the surfaces in your bathroom. As you clean up, make sure you wear safety gloves.

Invest in Professional Water Damage Repair

Since you are not a professional, you may struggle with the steps mentioned above. You might even fail to drain all the water in your bathroom, which can result in water damage and mold growth. Only with the help of a water damage restoration company in Bridgeview, IL, can you get rid of water damage.
