Does the area you live in have high moisture?
Water damage is a nuisance for homeowners everywhere. Furniture of any kind does not mix well with water at all. Water damage can take quite a toll on your furniture regardless of the material that it is made of.
You should protect your furniture if you live in an area with high moisture or flooding. Water damage protection will prevent many headaches and financial tensions. It can keep your expensive furniture safe and dry as you wait for the flood to pass by or any leaks to get fixed.
Keep Furniture at Elevation
If your house is in a flood-prone area then you will need some permanent solution. You can’t get your house elevated on planks since that is only possible for new houses. What you can do instead is remodel the interior of your house. Add slight steps of elevation so your furniture is at a slight height from the floor. This will protect your furniture in case floodwater enters your home.
Invest in Sandbags and Barriers
You should look into sandbags and other barrier items. These can be used to line your yard and protect it from passing flood waters. Your house and your furniture will thus be protected in case any water does enter your home. If the sandbags fail and some water manages to slip past them, you can always use them inside the home. Make barriers and channels with sandbags to direct water away from any furniture.
Keep Hydrophobic Covers
Flood waters aren’t the only source of water damage in the world. Dripping roofs and leaking walls are also a common reason. These occur due to rain water entering through some crack or gap in the roof. It can pool on ceilings and make its way down by dripping and leaking. Ideally, you should move furniture from any drip spots but some furniture is very heavy. You can instead cover furniture with hydrophobic sheets and covers. There are a variety of hydrophobic materials available now. They totally repel water and do not allow any absorption.
Hydrophobic covers can also come in very handy for moisture problems. High moisture can ruin upholstery and cause mold growth. Hydrophobic covers will prevent moisture from soaking in upholstery and keep it dry.
Ensure Temperature and Humidity Control
Your temperature control system should always be maintained and in perfect condition. Temperature control and humidity levels are very important in avoiding water damage. Furniture does well in dry environments with good ventilation.
Always have regular A/C servicing particularly before and after the rainy season. The moisture is high during rains and can cause mold very easily.
