Effective Leadership Practices and Skills to Hone

Business Professional Details Leadership Skills

Leadership is not something you’re born with, but instead it is a series of skills and a mindset which can be trained over time and with practice. People who work at leadership and who want to be leaders can effectively lead any time, regardless of their personality types or physical attributes.

As a business coach and former corporate executive, I have had the honor of working with and around some fantastic leaders, and also had the displeasure of working with some poorer leaders. In my experience, I have found a few common traits which I feel effective leaders have, and they are all skills which can be trained and perfected over time.

When working with clients, I can provide several useful skills as a coach including time management, strategic planning, policy and procedure creation and more, but in almost any case I help my clients work on their leadership ability.

Whether it’s in one on one training with a business owner, in a group of business executives or with people who are brand new to managing others, I focus on the following three qualities in my management training. These qualities, when combined with the mentality of wanting to lead, can help someone get the most out of their teams.

Communication

An effective leader must be a good communicator. When we discuss communication from this standpoint, it doesn’t necessarily mean in a public speaking standpoint, but rather it involves being clear, concise and deliberate with your communication when talking to your team. No one wants to receive unclear instructions in a professional setting, and without the ability to communicate you could see a decrease in productivity and morale from people who don’t know what their role is or how they fit in.

Delegation

When someone takes the step from being a worker to a leader, whether they’re opening a business and acting as the owner for the first time or they just got promoted to a management role, the one thing they struggle most with is delegation of tasks. It’s in our nature to take on the important tasks ourselves, but a leader knows how and when to delegate. They also only delegate to people who are well equipped to handle the task, and they ensure the people they are delegating to have a clear understanding of what they need to do (which goes back to communication). If you can’t delegate, you will never move past working in your business to the advanced stage of working on your business.

Motivation

A great leader knows how to keep their teams motivated, bought in and all pushing toward the same goal. Leaders must be able to share a vision for a company, help people understand how they fit in and also how their contributions help the company at large and their immediate co-workers. In addition, leaders legitimately care about the “why” of their team members and do their best to help them succeed professionally so they can chase their personal goals as well.
