Do you know what the most common fire hazards on university campuses are? Here are some of them.

University students are often found complaining about rules they have to abide by on campus. What they fail to realize is that those rules exist for their safety, as well as for their peers. Speaking of safety, one of the most common risks on university campuses is that of fire accidents. Some universities in the US have banned the use of electric appliances in dorm rooms, for they pose a potential fire hazard. Some of these electrical appliances include irons, toasters, and microwave ovens.Electrical Appliances

Sometimes, the fire hazards on university campuses are the product of arson. In the past, there have been events where students have tried to ignite items with lighters, which resulted in life-threatening fire accidents. Other fire hazards on university campuses include grease in kitchen chimneys, wrong use of extension cords and faulty electrical appliances and connection. The authorities encourage students and their teachers to practice effective exit strategies, in case there is a fire or any other accident.

Here are some of the most common fire hazards you need to be careful about on your university campuses.

Cooking Equipment

As discussed above, some universities in the US prohibit the use of cooking equipment with heat sources inside dorm rooms. Using them irresponsibly can lead to a nasty fire accident. There have been countless events in which toasters, hotplates, ovens, and microwaves have been the sources of fire when misused.

Clutter

Another source of fire on university campuses is clutter. Some universities have stood up the issue, and do not allow more than 50% of the walls and doors to be covered. They justify this rule by the fact that too many wall hangings and decoratives do more harm than good, and serve as fuel if there is a fire. After universities, schools have also started imposing similar rules on their campuses.

Electrical Appliances

Electrical appliances are more of a necessity than a luxury, and in university dorms, you will see a lot of them. However, plugging in too many electrical appliances in a single extension can result in a short circuit, which is one of the most common fire hazards on university campuses, and everywhere else.

Smoking

Throughout the country, smoking is strictly prohibited on university campuses. However, some disgruntled kids sneak cigarettes into their dorm rooms. A carelessly tossed lit cigarette can easily start a fire when it comes into contact with fabrics and flammable substances. Keeping this in view, universities have designated smoking areas, which are far away from the university campus and the dorms.

A fire accident isn’t pretty, and the more you try to follow the rules about fire damage the better of you’d be.
