Local Business Coach Helps Build Leadership Skills
As a business coach, it’s my job to look at the big picture of a company’s operation and use my expertise to help the business thrive. This can be done by assisting with planning, creating policies, guiding businesses through rules and regulations and other tasks related to running the company, but also through building skills in key members of the company which help it thrive.
While all my coaching sessions are tailored to the unique needs of my clients, almost all of them have some form of leadership development component. For owners and executives in companies of all sizes, the ability to lead others to reach the company goal is an essential trait and a person’s leadership ability can be honed through training and practice.
In this article, I will discuss a few key points I cover with owners and executives to help them become better leaders. In my experience, I have found the most crucial trait of a leader is the desire to lead. If you want to help others succeed, I can help build the skills to follow to help you become an effective leader.
Communication
Above all else, a leader in the business world must be an effective communicator. Whether you are the owner conveying your goals to middle management, a department leader who needs to ensure their entire team understands their role or any leader in between, understanding how to communicate is key to helping your team thrive.
The best communicators aren’t the people who are the most eloquent or the loudest, they are in fact the best listeners. In my training, we cover how to actively listen when people talk. When you learn how to understand what people are saying, you can actually pick out the information they need to hear as they talk, and then you can use your expertise to give them exactly what they need to succeed. Instead of trying to force your point across, a leader listens first and then tailors their message to meet the needs of the person they are speaking with.
Delegation
Unless a leader learns to delegate, they will never stop working in the business long enough to work on it. When you get caught up in the daily activities of the company, it’s impossible to take time to focus on the needs of your team. Instead, learning to delegate is key, and in my training we discuss how to delegate, how to know if your people are equipped to handle the task you’re giving them and how to trust the work will be done, but also have checks in place to ensure it is.
Motivation
Leaders must also understand what makes their team members come to work every day. Whether it’s just for the paycheck or they have a larger purpose, a leader understands how to motivate each person and drive them toward being the best versions of themselves. I always focus on understanding personality types and how to uncover a person’s “why” with leadership trainees to help them motivate effectively.
