There are few worse feelings than when your air conditioning stops working in the summer. Temperatures can rise quickly and if it’s hot enough, a broken AC unit can become a safety issue. This is why it’s important to have a go-to contractor who you can trust to get the job done when issues do arise.

Our company has been providing heating, ventilation and air conditioning services for people in Antioch, Pleasant Hill, Pittsburg, Concord and the entire East Bay Area for years, and we’re proud to be the trusted partner for these services for many people in our communities.

In this article, we will address a few of the most common problems which cause AC units to break, along with some warning signs to look out for and a little about the process we take to correct these issues. Hopefully this will help you in the event of an outage and give you a better idea of the service we can provide.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Air conditioning units work by using a chemical called freon, also known as refrigerant, to cool down air before forcing it through your home and cooling via ducts. When the system is working as it should, there is a sufficient amount of freon to cool the air without overworking the system.

When the freon levels begin to fall, typically via a leak, the system begins to work in overdrive to cool your home. This not only raises your bills and can cause damage in the long term, it can create ice on the unit’s evaporator coil, which can cause the system to lose its cooling ability. When this happens, you can see ice on the lines running into your home and you should turn the system off then give us a call. We can locate and repair the source of the freon leak, add new freon and get you back up and running quickly.

Condensation Shut-Off/Leaks

An air conditioning unit creates excess moisture during the cooling process due to condensation which forms in the system. Units are equipped with pipes which safely transport this water from the unit outside of the home called condensation lines. In some instances, these lines can become stopped up or clogged with dust, dirt or other debris.

When this happens, most systems have a shutoff valve if the water reaches a certain level. Others don’t, or the valve malfunctions, which can result in a leak. If you notice water or your system shuts off completely, this could be the reason. Our team can clean the valves and get your system running when this occurs.

Uneven Cooling

If some areas of your home feel cool and others don’t, the culprit could be dirty filters or clogged ducts. Ducts are essential to optimal operation of your unit and if there is an issue they could cause your system to be overworked and take years off its lifespan. If you notice uneven cooling, we can clean your ducts and ensure they are airtight to help your system run as intended.
