Small Business: How Networking Can Help Growth

BY: Allan Carraway, FocalPoint Business Coach of Anchorage, AK

Small businesses staying connected to their communities is essential for their growth: often not having the benefits of more financial resources and staff that larger companies have, small business owners should prioritize broadening their connections, forming supportive relationships with peers, and consistently engaging their local clients and prospective clients with optimal marketing strategies.

Finding Leads

Finding leads is one of the most well-known benefits of networking. Attending business conferences and events are among the most popular ways of networking, but online business groups are rising in popularity. Additionally, some online groups host in-person meetups for networking.

I offer group business coaching services to my clients as an opportunity to learn critical business growth strategies with and network with other entrepreneurs – providing them with possibilities to find leads, form strategic partnerships, or collaborate in the future.

Exchange Valuable Information

As a small business owner, assessing your local industry marketplace is essential in gathering relevant information. When you network, especially with other business owners in your industry, you can exchange valuable information on current community trends, events, and shifts in consumer demand.

Strategic Partnerships

While it’s essential to stay competitive as a small business owner to attract and keep clients, it’s also to attract collaborations with other businesses. Partnering with your peers provides several benefits: increased resources, excellent promotions and sales, product and service innovation, supply chain partnership opportunities, unique market opportunities, customer base expansion, financial services, and more.

Public outreach and staying involved in the market and your industry will give you an advantage in attracting offers of creating strategic partnerships.

How to Effectively Network

I refer my clients to a technique called omni-directional relationship building to describe the social dynamics of business relationships to maintain positive and productive relationships with team staff, partners, vendors, employees, and other businesses. The goal is to maintain mutually-beneficial relationships using consistent communication and outreach based on shared interests and goals.

Engage and Maintain Your Professional Relationships

With improved communication, my clients learn the following ways to stay connected to other entrepreneurs:

  • How to diversify your relationships – learn how to network outside your business.
  • How to connect others – link people with others and share industry and nonprofit-sector information to help broaden your connections and the connections of those around you.
  • How to use quality time – maintain relationships with the people who contribute the most to your business: your team, partners, and loyal customers.
  • How to maintain communication – continuously work on maintaining those relationships.

Create a Networking Activity Schedule

Staying in contact with other entrepreneurs is essential for maintaining productive relationships. Commit to incorporating an occasional check-in with your business contacts. Even if you’re not ready to collaborate, contacting your peers shows investment and initiative. Additionally, you still have the opportunity to exchange valuable information about the industry, community events, and more.

Small business owners can book a consultation with me today for more strategies and guidance in effective networking.
