Neck and Back Injuries

While back and neck injuries can result from many different types of accidents, they are often associated with auto accidents, falls, or sports injuries. Back and neck injuries can range in severity and can further worsen in time due to wear and tear on the body. As a result, even seemingly minor neck and back injuries can later develop into much more serious conditions if left untreated, such as herniated discs, compressed nerves, and so forth.

When spinal cord injuries occur, the result is often painful and potentially disabling: people are paralyzed all too often. Below is a list of common events that either cause or aggravate your neck and/or back:

  • Nerve compression. Herniated disks or bone spurs in the vertebrae of your neck can press on the nerves branching out from the spinal cord injuries. Rear-end auto collisions often result in a whiplash injury, which occurs when the head is jerked backward and then forward, straining the soft tissues of the neck. In auto accidents, there are five common injuries:
    1. Soft Tissue Injury
    2. Scrapes & Cuts
    3. Head Injuries
    4. Chest Injuries
    5. Arm & Leg Injuries.*
  • Sports Injury. These types of injuries could be a little more dangerous as some injuries take some time to appear.
Taking football as an example, studies have found high rates of concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and a serious brain disorder called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in former players.**
  • Slip and Fall. Falling down or slipping on something is not only embarrassing, but it can also result in considerable injuries. Many things factor in the severity of the injury including weight, surface conditions, activity, and much more.
  • Muscle strains. Overuse, such as too many hours hunched over your computer or smartphone, often triggers muscle strains. Even minor things, such as reading in bed or gritting your teeth, can strain neck muscles.
  • Worn joints. Just like the other joints in your body, your neck joints tend to wear down with age. Osteoarthritis causes the cushions (cartilage) between your bones (vertebrae) to deteriorate. Your body then forms bone spurs that affect joint motion and cause pain.
  • Diseases. Certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, meningitis, or cancer, can cause neck pain.

People who have suffered a serious neck or back injury the pain, the loss of ability to work, to support a family, or to live normally need to take their conditions seriously and with great caution. In addition to physical pain and challenges, you may feel depressed, angry, and emotionally devastated. At Sanchez & Brown, our injury attorneys will help you pursue the compensation you deserve and hold the responsible party accountable.
