How to Clean the Dust Out of an Electric Heater

Don’t allow a dusty electric heater to compromise the health of your family or create the illusion of a dirty home.  Regular use causes dirt, debris, and particle build-up to form inside space heaters and other electric heaters.  This buildup is unsightly, reduces system performance, causes odors, and can lead to fires. Clean the electric heater with the following guidelines.

Note: Before cleaning an electric heater, read and follow the guidelines provided by the heater’s manufacturer.

Supplies You’ll Need

Gather all the supplies needed to clean an electric heater:

  • Sponge
  • Screwdriver (to remove heater cover)
  • Water
  • Microfiber cloth
  • A vacuum cleaner with hose attachment

How to Clean an Electric Heater

  1. Disconnect the electric heater from the wall outlet.
  2. Give the heater time to cool down completely. This can take a couple of hours in some cases.
  3. Use a microfiber duster to clean the surface of the heater. Remove any excess dust with a damp sponge. Make sure the sponge is not saturated in water as this can damage the heater.
  4. Allow the heater time to dry.
  5. Unscrew the heater’s cover. Spray the inside with a compressed air duster to loosen dry dust and debris. Spray the slats and vents if your heater does not include a cover.
  6. Vacuum out the debris and dust. The hose attachment with your machine works great for this task. Avoid disturbing any wires while vacuuming.
  7. Give the interior a one-over with the damp sponge. Remove anything stuck to the unit. Do not complete this step when cleaning an electric space heater with a non-removable cover.

Electric Heater Cleaning Tips

The following tips ease the already simple electric heater cleaning process.

  • Protect your lungs and face by wearing a disposable mask while cleaning the heater
  • Clean the heater once every two weeks to one month to reduce the build-up
  • Never spray water directly inside a heater. Ensure the sponge used is not saturated in water
