How to Apply (or Remove) Window Graphics

RainMaker Signs can install your window lettering ensuring it is positioned and leveled properly without wrinkles or bubbles.  But applying window lettering is also something you can do yourself by following these simple steps.

Applying Window Graphics

  1. Make sure the window or application surface is clean and free of dust or residue.
  2. Position your window graphics or lettering on your window.  Be sure you are satisfied with the position and that you use a level to ensure your graphics are straight.  Once you are satisfied with the position, use a few small pieces of masking tape to hold your graphic in place.
  3. Apply a piece of masking tape horizontally along the top edge of your window graphic extending out both sides beyond the top of the graphics
  4. Lift the graphics up and, working from the top, peel the backing paper down half way.   The backing paper is the paper closest to the window surface.  Be careful not to let the graphic touch the glass surface while peeling the backing paper down.
  5. Flip your graphic or lettering down and using a small squeegee apply your graphic from the top, squeegee-ing in left and right motions from the center of the graphics out.
  6. Peel the backing paper as you move down, continuing to squeegee from the center out to the left and right as you move down until the entire backing paper is removed and your lettering is applied to the glass surface.
  7. Peel off the masking tape and the application tape by peeling off slowly at a 45 degree angle.

Tips:

  • The larger the graphic the more challenging the application.  Cut larger graphics into smaller pieces to apply.  Cut carefully between (not through) letters or graphic elements after the vinyl is hinged with masking tape to the surface.
  • If using an application fluid, wait 30 minutes before removing the backing paper from your vinyl graphic or lettering.

Removing Window Graphics

Difficulty of removing window lettering can vary based several factors such as surface type and the age of the vinyl.  Over time, the properties of adhesives can change becoming more aggressive once beyond the recommended lifetime of the vinyl.

The best two tools to use when removing your vinyl lettering are a regular or plastic razor blade and a hair dryer.  Use you’re the razor blade to peel the vinyl off the surface.  If you have difficulty removing the vinyl use heat from your heat gun or hair dryer to loosen the adhesive.

Do not attempt to heat glass or brittle surfaces in cold weather – they may crack or shatter.
