Custom Wall Plaque Display for Cantigny First Division Museum in Wheaton, IL

Posted in: Videos

The Sign Authority, Inc., located in Wheaton, IL recently fabricated and installed a custom wall plaque display honoring the veteran employees at Cantigny First Division Museum located in Wheaton, IL. Cantigny First Division Museum showcases military history from World War I. They also have an amazing tank park outside the museum for visitors to see actual World War I tanks.

The Sign Authority has done many unique display projects for the museum over the years, but this project was particularly interesting due to the multiple materials used in creating the custom wall plaque display. The team at Cantigny had a vision and a purpose for this project. They wanted to honor the employees at Cantigny that are veterans, because being a military museum, it just made sense.

Their vision was to incorporate their oak leaf logo element in the design as a backdrop for the name plaques. They also wanted some words on the plaque to explain the purpose of the sign. Our team at The Sign Authority discussed the options and materials that could make their vision a reality.

The main backer panel was cut from ½” thick clear acrylic and we then polished the edges to create a high-end “glass look” to the backer panel. We then printed on clear vinyl and backed it with white vinyl to “second surface” mount the print to the acrylic. What this means is that the print is mounted behind the acrylic face so that you look through it. The Oak leaf was laser cut from ¼’ thick brushed aluminum with studs to set the leaf off the face slightly. The plaques were digitally printed on black pvc and cut out to apply to the leaf. We left some space at the bottom, so that they could add more names if needed. We used brushed aluminum stand-offs in the corners of the backer panel as a finishing touch for mounting the piece to the wall.

The photo really doesn’t do this piece justice, so you are just going to have to go and visit the museum to see it for yourself. Oh, and yes you might want to take a look at all the wonderful exhibits at the museum while you are there.
