The distance is the physical space between the search results and the search site. If a user doesn’t specify a search location, Google can measure the distance on the basis of the location of the user.
So say you ‘re searching across the street using your phone and you’re looking for a bank to do business with, Google will give you that result. You don’t need to do “bank close me”. You can do “bank” only. Probably, that first result will be Google’s three pack that bank is closest to you. So that’s called proximity to the user. It’s the distance from where you’re searching from. And the reason they are doing so is that they want to show you the most important, meaningful results. And all of Google’s aim is to get you to stay on Google. So keeping you there with the most meaningful results does that, keeping you on Google and letting them constantly hit you with ads. So, they want that feature to be made. That’s why Google started asking for your location a long time ago because they would like to offer the ideas. They want the most meaningful results they can give you.
So how can you capitalize on that knowledge now, as a local business owner? So what we’re saying to do, and that’s on your website, you’ll be using your location. First of all, if your location is nearest to the downtown area, that’s great. That’s one great advantage. The next thing we want you to do on your website is to start writing articles about any local landmark that you are in and want to serve in that city. So if you have multiple locations, one thing we’ve talked about is to make sure every location is connected to their proper Google My Business list. So you don’t just want to have my business listing on every Google connected to your homepage. Then from there you want a location specific page.
Another thing you might be considering is joining that local chamber of commerce. You love the chamber of commerce for the link. This link from the website of that chamber of commerce shows you are important locally. So it may be a hassle, but if you have a large service area joining each of those chambers and getting a link directly to your location page for that city could be something you should consider. And, basically, a lot of chambers of commerce never take that link down. And if you joined in for a year, you could be there forever. I’m sure chamber by chamber is different.
