Posted in: Industry News

There’s trouble with your laser printer and you don’t know what it is. Do you call a technician for repair? Throw the printer in the trash and get a new one? Or perhaps give it the silent treatment, then later it’ll realize that it did you wrong and will apologize by starting to work properly again? Well, maybe not the silent treatment, but before you kick your investment to the curb, or call a technician, you can do a little troubleshooting and the answer may be simpler than you think.

Power Up
First things firsts, is your printer plugged in? Sounds a bit elementary, but we use so many electronics in our everyday that we can sometimes forget that the power supply still comes from that hole in the wall. So check the connections from the wall and surge protectors. Look to see that they are plugged in and turned on. Press the reset button or switch it off then on to make sure that it is working. Also check the cords and connections from the printer itself to the wall and to the computer, make sure that they are plugged in securely as well.

Don’t Forget Your PJs
Paper jams are one of the more common causes for laser printer malfunction. Remove any paper that may be jammed inside and pull it out in the direction the paper flows. Inspect for any small pieces of paper, or anything really, that may have been torn off, or dropped in, and lodged into the printer’s gears, and carefully pull those out. Check the paper tray to see if the paper is properly set. When paper gets fed into the printer improperly, paper jams can occur.

Tone Your Image
Is there enough toner for your laser printing? It could be time for a new toner cartridge. If there is enough toner left, try taking out the cartridge and ever so gently rock it to redistribute the toner. Also when you remove the toner cartridge, examine it carefully for any damages because that can cause image problems too. Finally, print out a test page (most printers will have this feature) to check your troubleshooting progress.

Preventative Maintenance- Cleaning
It is always a good idea to keep your electronics clean. They are in fact machines and not just magical boxes that do as we please. Taking care of your laser printer will ensure continual savings, and with simple maintenance to prevent dirt and debris from ruining your investment, you can ensure that any problems you may encounter could have been prevented.
