How to Tell if You Need New Tires?

With this easy test, a penny can buy you peace of mind when it comes to your tires and safety.

Place a penny headfirst into each tread groove across each tire. If you always see the top of Lincoln’s head, your treads very worn and you have much less traction on the road. If this is the case, your tires need to be replaced as soon as possible.

If part of Lincoln’s head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 2/32 of an inch of tread remaining on the tire. If this is the case then you probably don’t need new tires at this time.

Why worry about your tread wear?

It’s all about safety first when it comes to replacing your tires before they are too worn. A worn set of tires are dangerous as they can cause your vehicle to lose traction on the road during inclement weather conditions.  When your tire tread is worn down, your car may respond poorly in inclement weather such as rain or snow. With good treads on your tires, your car will have a lot more traction on the read. It is also important to note that having insufficient tread on your tires is considered illegal in many states which means you could receive a fine. And finally, worn treads can make other parts of your car wear out sooner than later.

What are some tread problems you may experience?

Excessive wear in the center tread can mean you have overinflated your tire. Excessive wear on the outsides may mean you have under-inflated your tire. Uneven tread wear may also mean you have poor wheel alignment. If the tread on the outer section of the tire becomes knobby, it may mean the is a problem with the toe-in value. Excessive wear on one side of the tire means that your camber angle most likely incorrect.
