BMW Headlight Technologies

Interested in learning about the various headlight technologies used in BMW cars? Read on to find out everything about them!

There’s arguably no vehicle classier than a BMW! This car has got everything – from a spacious and luxurious interior to a chic and modern exterior. However, what we truly admire about the BMW series is the use of different headlight technologies to boost the aesthetic appeal of the well-loved car. Currently, the BMW headlights employ three technologies – halogens, LEDs, and laser tech. All three of these are easily detectable thanks to their unique light signatures.

So, let’s take a deeper look at all of the BMW headlights that employ these technologies:

BMW Halogen LightsLED Headlights

Halogen lights are the most common lights used in car headlights. Halogen technology is essentially an incandescent bulb filled with halogen gas, which increases the intensity of the light and the projector output. Today, halogen lights are used in the truly basic versions of some BMW models including the F40 1 Series, F48 X1, and G01 X3. For entry-level models, the main halogen headlight is paired with supplementary LED-based daytime running lights (DRL).

BMW LED Headlights

The standard LED headlights have a basic LED projector in each headlight. These lights don’t come with adaptive functions such as adjusting to your speed, incoming traffic, etc. These headlights are available in entry-level cars of some BMW models including theG20/G21 3 Series, F22/F23 2 Series, I01 i3, and more. Some higher positioned trims from the current 4 Series (F3x), 1 Series (F40), and the lower X lineup (X1 to X4) also have these standard LED headlights.

BMW Adaptive LED Headlights

The BMW adaptive LED headlights depend exclusively on diodes for both short and high beam phases to illuminate the road. These diodes can adjust their illumination according to road conditions, vehicle speed, and incoming traffic. BMW cars that are equipped with adaptive LED headlights include the G05 X5 to G07 X7 series, G11/G12 7 Series LCI, and G14 to G16 8 Series.

The X5 and X6 come with an individual light signature for the adaptive LEDs, with attractive, flattened “eye” graphics. Meanwhile the luxury models such as the 7 Series – 8 Series get identical light graphics for both adaptive LEDs and the optional BMW laser lights.

BMW Laser Headlights

The BMW laser headlights are essentially enhanced, fully adaptive LED lights. Their high beam is supported via laser tech. The laser illuminates the road more sharply and densely than LEDs, which dramatically improves the visibility at night and reduces the glare effect of the lights for incoming traffic. These lights also come with all adaptive features. The G2x 3 Series models come with optional laser lights. The laser tech is identified by signature blue accents on the light diodes, which take the shape of an X on the BMW X models.

Now that you know the basics of the headlight technologies used in different BMW models, make sure to keep your headlights running in optimal condition. If they start to falter, then visit an auto repair shop that specializes in BMWs to get your vehicle’s headlights repaired.
