San Leandro, CA – Skate Industry News: Curren Caples Still Silky Smooth

Posted in: Uncategorized

Curren Caples born January 10, 1996 in Akron Ohio. The son of former pro surfer Evan Caples, Curren is a buttery smooth killer of both street and transition with a surfy style that flows like a soul song. Which makes sense when you’re named after legendary surfer Tom Curren. Growing up in Ventura, California Curren had the opportunity to skate and surf whenever he wanted, but he was pulled more towards the concrete than the ocean. He was sponsored by Flip at age 11, just after his best friend, Louie Lopez was put on the team. From there, Curren went on a tear, competing in the Maloof Money Cup, Damn Am, Tampa Am and more. He turned pro in March 2013, and his first professional contest, the Tampa Pro, where he placed 69th.

Shortly after turning pro for Flip, Curren released 3 video parts with Louie Lopez and Alec Majerus to commemorate the occasion. Despite his finish at Tampa, fans were drawn to his smooth surf style, effortless control over transitions and picturesque blonde locks. Almost reminiscent of our forefather, the late Jay Adams. Just to back his pro status up, he would go on to win an X Games Gold, the “Dew Tour Athlete of the Year” in 2013 and take his first Dew Tour Gold for Street Style in 2015 during the Chicago stop.

At X Games Barcelona 2013 he won a silver medal in skateboard park. That same year he won the VQS Surf contest in Kauai beating Sunrise Shack owner Koa Smith. At X Games Munich 2013, he won a platinum medal in skateboard park, beating the favorite, Pedro Barros. Caples qualified 2nd behind Barros in the skateboard park qualifying at the 2014 Austin X Games, eventually finishing 1st in the final. In the skateboard street event he was knocked out of qualifying by Ryan Sheckler, failing to reach the final six. Most recently has had several top 10 finishes in the Vans Park series, Dew Tour and International contests.

Caples currently rides for Skate Mental, Ace Trucks, RVCA Clothing, Vans, Mob, Oakley, Bones Swiss Bearings, Monster Energy and Momentum Ride Shop. Check out his new part on Thrasher for Vans! It’s a killer!!
