San Leandro, CA – Piercing Industry News: The Best Season To Get Pierced?

Posted in: Uncategorized

You’ve made the decision to get a piercing and you are ready to make an appointment. When is the perfect time to get pierced? What are the seasonal pros and cons to consider before going through with a piercing? Whether you choose to get your piercing during the hot summer or cooler winter months depends hugely on your lifestyle.

After your piercing, you are can expect a 25-60% chance of slight swelling within the first 3 days. Circulation will increase and blood will rush to the area. Inflammation is a healthy body reaction and a response to the treatment even though it is not as fun as your piercing will be once it is healed! Areas that tend to have good blood flow such as earlobes, lips, nose and even nipples may experience up to 60% chance of swelling, no two areas or piercings will swell equally. With the possibility of swelling in mind, we advise that you accept the size of the jewelry as recommended by your piercer. It is not advised to use jewelry that is too long as they tend to get caught in your clothes, hair and who knows what else. Also, jewelry that is too short should be avoided as the jewelry may get “swallowed up” by any swelling.

Summer – During summer, the steady blood flow to the pierced area increases due to the heat, which can actually speed up the healing process while flushing away toxins from the skin’s surface.
Winter –  Certain areas such as the ears, nose and other facial areas experience reduced blood flow due to the cold. Think of your feet and hands during winter which are usually colder than the rest of the body.  However, less blood flow also means less possibility of swelling, so you may want to schedule your piercing for winter. If you play summer sports, or hit the pool frequently during summer, it might be better for you to get your piercing in winter to give it enough time to heal and ready to show it off in summer!

As long as you strictly follow the body piercing aftercare and keep the area clean, you can go ahead and get that new piercing for summer or winter. So, what are you waiting for? Head down to Orbit Skate and Boutique and let one of our industry professional assist you today!
