San Leandro, CA Oakland, CA Fire, Rain, and Insurance!

Posted in: Industry News

Here in California, we are currently experiencing heavy rain in Northern California and at the same time we are experiencing fires in Southern California. This is pretty unusual for one state

When it comes to insurance, understanding what’s considered to be a covered cause of loss can be difficult. While most of us know that FIRE is a covered cause of loss and paid by your insurance policy almost regardless of what type of insurance you buy.

However, when it comes to rain that damages your property, sometimes there will be coverage but other times it will not be covered. Why? This doesn’t make any sense. If you have damage to your property, shouldn’t it be covered?

Sometimes rain falls and water leaks into your Residence. This can cause damage to your property, but it may not be covered. For example, if you have rainfall that comes through a roof that has NOT been properly maintained, the resulting damage may be considered to be neglect or lack of maintenance as opposed to a covered cause of loss like water damage. On the other hand if your roof is properly maintained, and there’s a rainstorm accompanied by wind that damages the exterior roofing material, the interior water damage will in fact be covered.

In most cases water that enters into your residence forcefully, such as through a windstorm, is it covered cause of loss. But water that enters your premises due to neglect or lack of maintenance will likely not be covered.Insurance company claims adjusters know very well what to look for and how do identify what’s covered and what isn’t.

We sincerely hope that you are not facing either one of these situations, heavy rain in Northern California or fire in Southern California. The time to review and address your insurance coverage as when you are not facing some sort of adversity like fire or rain. We encourage you to call us today for a consultation about your property and your location and the coverage that best suits your needs.
