Are you sure your car’s brake system is functioning flawlessly? Read on to know whether the brakes need to be repaired.

Your vehicle’s brake system is certainly among the most critical safety features it has. Like other components, it’s subject to wear and tear and requires regular maintenance. This not only ensures the proper functioning of the system but also helps avoid unnecessary repairs. However, it’s sometimes difficult to tell whether your brakes need servicing.

Thankfully, you need not be an auto mechanic to be able to detect brake issues. Here are things you need to look out for to determine whether your car’s brakes need to be repaired:

Excessive Vibration

If you notice that your car excessively vibrates when braking, its brake rotors might have been warped. These are supposed to press your brake pads against the wheel, forcing the vehicle to stop. When they get overheated or worn-out, they’ll warp and/or deform. As a result of this, they’ll contact the brake pads unevenly, thereby causing vibration. To prevent further damage to the brakes, tires, and other important components, you must have your car inspected and serviced at your earliest.

Poorly Responsive Brakes

The most obvious sign that your brakes need to be repaired is when they demonstrate poor braking performance. If your brake pedals feel unresponsive or ‘slushy’ when you apply them, there’s either leak in the brake hose or it has issues with the brake fluid. Even if the brakes are not totally unresponsive but take longer to foster a complete stop, you may only need to replace the brake pads.

Grinding or Squealing Noise

Upon pressing down on your brakes, if you hear a grinding noise, it’s a clear indication of worn-out brake pads. Worn-out brake pads cause the squealer (a metal tab) to press against the rotor, warning you that the brakes need to be replaced. If you procrastinate on the repair job, it will eventually begin to make the grinding sound. When this happens, your car may not stop at high speed and may even lose its braking function altogether. Your aim should be to address the problem the day you hear the sound.

Car Pulls When Braking

If your car is pulling to one side while braking, you’re either faced with misaligned tires or an intrusion of foreign materials in the brake fluid.

When a tire is misaligned, the brake pad of this tire wears down faster than the other brake pads, resulting in lower braking efficiency in the misaligned tire. As a result of this, your car slows down more quickly than the other side, causing the pulling effect.

On the other hand, if your car’s hydraulic system gets packed with debris, the braking pressure in your braking system can be compromised, resulting in uneven braking. In either case, you should get your vehicle serviced with a reliable, local auto shop.
