Sacramento, CA – Understanding Lighted Sign Codes in Sac County | Sign Business

Posted in: Industry News

In Sacramento County, there are sign codes which businesses need to follow to erect a lighted sign. Businesses need to apply for a county permit to install any type of sign, including lighted signs. Let’s take a look at these requirements in detail.

Sacramento County Lighted Sign Codes

When it comes to lighted signs, there are two important sign code requirements businesses need to be aware of. The following are required codes:

15.148.640 Animated and intensely lighted signs.

“No sign shall be permitted which is animated by means of flashing, scintillating, blinking or traveling lights or any other means not providing constant illumination. No sign shall be permitted which because of its intensity of light constitutes a nuisance or hazard to vehicular traffic, pedestrians, or adjacent properties. (Prior code § 3.08.153)”

15.148.690 Outline tubing.

“Outlining of a building by means of exposed neon tubing, exposed incandescent lighting, or other artificial lighting, or an equivalent effect is prohibited. (Prior code § 3.08.158)”

After reviewing the sign codes above, animated, and flashing lights are not allowed on lighted signs in Sacramento County. This means lighted signs are permitted but must not be disruptive or a hazard for anyone.

Different Types of Lighted Signs

  • Channel letter signs are individually lit 3D letters. These signs are very effective for advertising to passing traffic and pedestrians. They are commonly seen in strip malls and on the storefronts of businesses.
  • Neon signs are made of glass tubes filled with neon gas. These signs are often seen at bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. They are also popular among small businesses.
  • Lightbox signs feature images and text printed on a clear panel in a box-shaped sign which houses a lighting element. These signs are commonly seen in small plazas above each business.
  • Pylon signs are giant freestanding signs with long poles to hang the sign high in the air. They usually have multiple businesses listed on the sign. They are used for advertising businesses along highways because the driver cannot see the businesses themselves. These types of signs are often seen in large shopping complexes with multiple retailers like a center with Kohl’s, Best Buy, and Trader Joe’s all in the same location.

Benefits of Lighted Signs

  • Advertising: Lighted signs are a great way to advertise. They are eye-catching and can be seen from a distance.
  • Increased Visibility: Lighted signs increase the visibility of a business, especially at night. This helps attract more customers.
  • Increased Sales: Lighted signs lead to increased sales for businesses. This is because they are more likely to catch the attention of potential customers.
  • Professional Appearance: Lighted signs give businesses a more professional and polished look. This helps attract and win over more customers.
