Signage Education | Engraved Signs and Plaques

Posted in: Industry News

Like most signs, engraved signs and plaques can come in a variety of sizes, styles and materials. Materials can range from wood, Extira, HDU (sign foam), aluminum, brass and bronze. The picture below shows examples of HDU and Extira in v-carved and sandblasted. The two bottom signs are HDU, the two top signs are Extira. Extira is a recycled wood composite that is treated to stand up to the outdoors, so it is a good application for signage and is a less expensive alternative to HDU or Cedar. The paint finish is just like HDU and can be a nice looking sign. The v-carved signs, like the two on the right in the picture reflect light well for exterior signs. By carving the signs in the v-carve shape you have an angle of the carved portion that points at you from the side in either direction. It’s more effective than just a round or flat cut groove would be. The sandblasted look can come in several styles of background also. The sign on the top left has a rugged overall blast effect. The bottom sign shows a lined blast effect and a pebble blast effect. All of these are painted with a paint that will last for many years.

This YMCA sign is another example of the v-carved sign on Extira. It gives a good appearance straight on or from different angles.

Carved signs or plaques can also have raised lettering. This occurs by routing out the material around the letters so they appear raised. For metal plaques this can also be done by using molds and casting the metal in the shapes or words desired. This no smoking sign is cast bronze, painted and finished with a nice clear coat finish. The time capsule sign is cast aluminum.

These are also examples of cast metal signs. Notice that the backgrounds have different textures that make it appear as if they are sandblasted. They can have the large or small pebble looks, grains or just left smooth without the finish. They can have many different shapes and finishes around the borders.

In general, there are a lot of ways to convey your message in a sign. Engraved signs and plaques can do a very nice job at it whether big or small. They can be used for subdivision entrance signs, memorials, name plates for businesses or anything else. Be creative or conservative, but choose the signs that work best for your intended purpose. At SignCraft Solutions we can help you choose that sign for you and design a look that will last forever.
