Monument and Pylon Signs

Posted in: Industry News

What catches your attention the most when driving down a busy street with lots of retail stores? It’s usually the sign by the roadside listing the name of the business or building occupants. These signs are referred to as monument signs or pylon signs.

A monument sign, like it’s name states, is a monument to the business or subdivision. It is usually substantial in it’s size and appearance. It can be lighted or unlighted. Monument signs can be made of stone, brick, cinder block with stucco, aluminum or other materials. A somewhat less expensive option is to do them in foam cored material. These types of monuments have a foam core with a sturdy rubber coating over the top. They can be shaped and painted to look like brick, stone, stucco or other materials. Sometimes it’s hard to tell from a distance that they are not real stone or brick. They hold up well and have a good warranty. Different faces or letters can be applied to them to provide creative displays and to get good visibility to the business. As with many signs, you are really only limited by your creativeness (and the city sign ordinances).

The only real difference between a monument sign and a pylon sign is that the pylon sign is going to show multiple occupants. The pylon sign can be a sign with various panels showing the occupants of a business or shopping center with posts on either side. It could also be a lighted cabinet with the business listed. They can be simple or very complex. There are multiple looks and styles. Again, for the most part they are only limited by your creativity.

The point with the monument and pylon signs is to do two things. One, it’s to communicate with the customers and help them find their intended location. Isn’t it nice when your driving down a street looking for a store and there it is, easily displayed on the sign? You know right where to turn and you don’t have to focus on checking address numbers. Two, it draws attention to your business and helps market your business. A fun, creative sign can be a great boost to a business as long as it doesn’t go overboard and send the wrong message. You don’t want it to be annoying.
