Dirty Custom Build Computer

Take a look at the pictures in this article. That’s what a dirty power supply looks like.

We received a call from Steve L in Walnut Creek, California because he had originally thought that his computer crashed when he upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.   Just like many others that have been frustrated with Windows 10, Steve was asking about how to go about switching back to Windows 7.   But, lo and behold, it turned out that computer really just needed some good old-fashioned cleaning and TLC.

We began our diagnosis process and quickly uncovered that the computer was extremely dust-filled and the heat sinks, specifically, were completely covered in a layer of dust. This amount of dust is like a warm insulating blanket over the part of the computer that needs to get access to airflow to cool down. A dust blanket like this can cause overheating and prevent the computer from booting up, making it appear as if it has completely crashed. If your computer reaches a certain temperature, it will shut down in order to try to protect itself.  So all we had to do was use our compressor to blow out all of the fur and dust, update the graphics chip driver, and the computer was able to boot up and run Windows 10.

After cleaning, we then ran diagnostics tests on all the hardware, and everything, including the hard drive, passed. However, even though it passed all of the tests, it was extremely slow to boot when firing up the operating system.  So we knew that obviously there was another issue.

We performed a malware scan and found a lot of it throughout the system.  After virus and malware removal, we ran a Windows repair and installed Kaspersky anti-virus. Now the computer is running much faster and without problems.

And Steve decided to stay with Windows 10.
