Computer Sales Questions | Windows 7? Do You Feel Lucky?

Posted in: Industry News

Looking to purchasing Windows 7 as soon as it is released?  You need to ask yourself one question; “Do you feel lucky?  Well do you…?”  {My apologies to Clint Eastwood 🙂 }

Before I go any further, let me say that everyone (including the techs) at my computer business, Computer Sales and Service, believe Windows 7 holds great promise to be a very good operating system (O/S).  In short, my geeks are happy.  In contrast, we never considered Windows Vista to be a good O/S and continue to recommend Windows XP for many of our customers.

The good news is that all of our trials and tests with Windows 7 (using the Beta plus Release Candidate versions) have supported the reports that Windows 7 is stable and that programs load faster than Vista.  The Aero theme included in Windows 7 provides a nice interface for multitasking and sorting through the many open applications and web pages that we all encounter. Plus, many of the other of Windows 7 features will provide a faster and safer Internet browsing experience.  So far, we would say Windows 7 is “Vista done right,” with some good enhancements.  Overall, Windows 7 provides a good “desktop experience” for the user.

On the other hand, going back as far as Windows 3.0, every Microsoft operating system (with the possible exception of Windows 2000) underperformed at initial release compared to the Microsoft hype.  Remember Windows 98?  Microsoft did not get Windows 98 right until Win 98 SE (Second Edition).   Windows ME (Millennium Edition) was never a good O/S.  Windows XP was a big improvement over Windows ME.  But, too many bugs, security flaws, and software/hardware incompatibilities were found in the initial release of Windows XP.  These flaws were not identified in the Beta and Release Candidate versions.  Windows XP turned out to be a good O/S for many customers only after SP1 (Service Pack 1) was released ten months later.

In summary, Windows 7 looks as promising as any previous Microsoft O/S prior to initial general release.  But, historically Microsoft O/S’s have had more than their share of  compatibility problems and glitches.  So, do you feel lucky?…
