Martinez & Walnut Creek, CA – Computer Service | “Beep Code” and “Click of Death”

Posted in: Industry News

Here are two examples of some computer problems that we have encountered in the last few months at our computer service shop at Cantrell’s Computer Sales & Service:

Our first example is our customer named Deana from Martinez, California who came in recently because her Dell i7 Alienware computer was getting a beep code (8 beeps) when booting. Our computer diagnostics showed the beep code indicated a bad video chip that is integrated on the motherboard. The best two options for the customer at this point were to replace versus repair the motherboard, or purchase a new computer. We provided our customer both options with pricing to replace the motherboard or purchase a new computer. We also offered to retrieve the data for customer, if desired.

Our 2nd example is from our customer Douglas who lives in Walnut Creek, CA and has a HP Touchsmart. His computer failed to boot and a clicking sound is heard. In this particular case, the clicking sound is a sign of a failing hard drive. This sound is sometimes referred to as the “Click of Death” and is caused by the read-write head of the hard drive slamming against its travel limits. Hard drives are not repairable from this mechanical failure and the only successful course of action was to replace the hard drive and reload the operating system.
