Pleasant Hill, CA – Common Computer Sales and Service Questions | Avoid Malware Infection While Surfing the Web

Posted in: Industry News

How do attackers distribute malware through web browsers versus the “tried and true” method of e-mail attachments?

Most malware code written today by the attackers (or hackers) is designed to be hard to detect.  One type of malware infects the browsing computer when it visits the web site.  This “drive-by” malware may infect the browsing computer and the victim is totally unaware of the infection.  The purpose of this malware can be to spread viruses, steal personal data including credit card information, passwords and banking numbers, or hijack the computer.

To reduce your chance of infection, avoid visiting high risk websites that promote “free” stuff that is too good to be true such as free music or movies.  The true purpose of the web site is to infect browsing computers, not provide the “free stuff.”  Of course, most victims will not purposely download malware so the attacker conceals his true intent.  The malware may be concealed in a “free” song or movie, or software.  And, beware of unexpected software updates when visiting web sites.  These “updates” that state they must be executed before listening/reading/watching the desired content is, in fact, the malware.

Also, some banner ads are malware.  Called “malvertising,” these ads can direct the victim to a web site that instructs them to download a pdf with hidden malicious code, or to divulge payment information.  Or, the banner ad may have hidden malware that attempts to load onto the victim’s computer when clicked.  Therefore, look closely at the advertisement:  Do you recognize the advertiser?  This simple check will reduce your risk of infection.

One last note:  Avoid opening suspicious messages or videos on social networking sites such as Facebook.  Messages over Facebook or instant messaging systems are able to contain malware.
