 Securing the DNS Settings on Your Personal Computer  

A Domain Name System (DNS) server is what makes a web address transform into its IP address. Normally your DNS server is supplied by your internet service provider (ISP). This can be an issue when working from home because ISP’s DNS servers may not be that private. They are also very slow, which can slow your overall internet connection. And because DNS servers may route you to risky websites, it is good to ask your IT person about securing the DNS settings on your computer. They may offer a “business friendly DNS server” or can setup tools that will help filter out malicious websites for more security.  

 Update Your Softphone Software  

A softphone is software that allows you to use Voice Over IP (VoIP) from your computer. However, because it is software it is vulnerable cyberattacks. Softphones can be hacked into and cause microphones and/or cameras to be activated without one’s knowledge. Cybercriminals often do this to collect private data from businesses. They also can make calls from your softphone without your knowledge, sometimes using an auto-dialing tool. Always be proactive and use preventative measures to keep your softphone secure. One of the best ways to do this is to always make sure your softphone software is up to date. 

 There a few ways you can detect whether your VoIP system is being hacked. One way is to check your call history for irregularities. Confirm the phone numbers on your phone bills are known or coming from a location that you are familiar with. Another thing to look for is if your microphones and web cameras are turning off and on or recording conversations without you initiating it. As we mentioned above, this is how hackers collect private data from businesses. Lastly, if you notice your telephone bill increase suddenly, this can also be a sign of your VoIP system being hacked into. The bad guys can take advantage and make long distance calls through your infrastructure or use an auto-dialing tool to have multiple phones access a premium rate link.
