CHARLOTTE, NC – Window Tinting Film VS Treatments: The Disadvantages

Posted in: Industry News

If you’re getting too much sunlight and heat in your home or business, there are basically two ways to go about solving your problem. One option is to treat your windows with shades, curtains, shutters or blinds, which all stop sun and heat once it passes through your windows. The other option is to use window film to filter and prevent the sunlight from entering the building in the first place.

There are situations where both options are the preferred solution, where one is a better choice over the other. There are also situations where the best solution is a combination of both. But for the purposes of this article, we’re going to concentrate on some of the disadvantages of window treatments like shades, shutters, blinds and curtains.

Disadvantage #1: Inhibits Daylight

Window treatments can solve problems with excessive solar heat and glare, but they can also inhibit daylight from passing into the interior space altogether. If you have a nice outside view through your windows, and want to preserve it, window treatments probably won’t be the best choice.  Depending on which type of window treatments you choose, either shades, shutters, blinds or curtains, the treatments are going to either obstruct the view, or block it completely.

Disadvantage #2: Fading

Over time your window treatments will start to fade from the sun’s intense ultraviolet rays, changing the look of your window treatments. The ultraviolet rays are not only damaging to human skin, they will also damage the interiors of your home or commercial space, like the floors, furniture and even your window treatments themselves. If the fading destroys your window treatments, and they no longer look good, you might end up wanting to replace them, which can cost a lot of money in the end.

Disadvantage #3: Heat Trapping causes you’re A/C unit to work overtime

Some window treatments, like shades and heavy curtains, trap solar heat that does get in and then displace it throughout the space.  This will make your home or commercial offices uncomfortable unless you continue to run your air conditioning regularly.  Heavy blackout shades, like those that you commonly see in hotels, still allow solar heat to get into the room, even though they are completely blocking out the light. Once the heat collects in the room, these heavy drapes act as an insulator to keep the heat inside and circulate it around. Without air-conditioning, the room will continue to heat up.

There are many different choices when it comes to window treatments and window tinting.  Both can help solve excessive heating problems, but only one can prevent solar heat from entering the space in the first place: window tinting film.
