Nowadays, many property owners want a light-filled house. The light and airy design opens up a room making it look even brighter, and it saves you money on your electricity bill each month.  Unfortunately, all that natural light comes with a price. While you knew that damaging UV rays harmed your skin, did you know they also damaged your home’s interiors? Learn how it affects your interior furnishings and how you can protect them from further damage.

UV Rays and Colored Textiles

UV rays act as a bleaching agent and can cause long-term damage to your interior textiles, such as your carpets and window treatments. It may also fade wall paper or artwork.  The more your home furnishings are exposed, the more they will fade.

UV Rays Cause Wood Damage

During photo-degradation, the UV light degrades organic materials, which includes things like your flooring or your coffee table.  This UV lights damages their natural beauty by causing the wood to fade and sometimes even crack and fade than is normal.  Alternatively, it can also cause your wood furniture to darken to a totally different shade, depending on what kind of wood it is. While some homeowners try to fix it with varnishes, the heat and the UV rays can harm those finishes too.

UV Rays and Leather Couches

The sun’s UV rays and leather do not play well together, especially if your couch is near the window. If it’s repeatedly exposed to the sunlight, it will not only fade but dry out. Eventually, as the leather couch’s natural oil dries up, it will begin cracking.

Saving Your Interiors

Take a look at that picture again. To prevent all that damage and fading, consider adding a window film to your windows. They not only block the UV rays from damaging your interior furnishings, but also your health.  It reduces the amount of harmful UV rays entering that room without changing the look of the room.
