Phoenix, AZ – Reviewing the Sig Sauer 45ACP P227 Handgun | Gun Range News

Posted in: Industry News

Sig Sauer is known for their pistols that are great for law enforcement use, and the P227 is no exception. With the P227 Sig Sauer tried to take everything that was great from its predecessor P226, including the size, and fit it into a .45 caliber gun. With its traditional double/single action and de-cocking lever, it seems like they were successful in this endeavor of a service-sized pistol, not only offer a smaller pistol with higher caliber, but offering 3 different versions of it.

Frame: The P227 frame has 3 different versions on the market currently. All the frames have a Nitron finish and a black, hard anodized alloy frame. The P227 Nitron measures to a 4.4-inch barrel and is identified as a duty handgun. For civilians and those looking for more self-defense geared handguns, they offer the P227 Carry and P227 Carry SAS 2B. Both of these have 3.9-inch barrels for easier concealment. The SAS 2B takes it a few steps farther with the Sig’s Anti-Snag Treatment making it better for plainclothes or quick draw self-defense. This version also sports the Sig short reset trigger, unlike the others offered.

Grip & Magazine: The P227 grip is a one-piece textured ergonomic grip. They are well proportioned with panels on the sides and backstrap area. The front strap is also finely textured to complete all of the secure handling a shooter could need. The standard magazine comes with 10 rounds, which is less than the P226, however a flush-fit extended magazine is sold separately that holds 14 rounds. The extended magazine does add about an inch at the bottom of the grip which is definitely manageable, but should still be noted for those really looking for the smallest pistol for grip or concealment purposes.

Sights: The P227 comes with either contrast or SIGLITE sights. Contrast sights are a white dot on the front sight with a notch and a single white vertical line on the back. Aiming should be done by creation an “I” with the sights and can be slightly difficult for more novice shooters. SIGLITE offers night sights with tritium vials used for self-powered 3-dot aiming system. This sight system is great for both bright and dim conditions making it the more plausible option for those with a heavy self-defense need. No need to constantly be changing out the sights to accommodate for the dim light where most defensive situations take place.

The Range: On the range this gun is proven to be completely reliable. The smooth trigger has reasonable control and feels almost identical to P226 with a little more recoil, not unmanageable. With hundreds of rounds put through it, they all go where you aim them and there were zero malfunctions. The P227 has been deemed a “no surprises” gun because it’s exactly as advertised, no less and no more.

Those looking for a reliable gun that has no surprises and is built specifically for defensive maneuvers and law enforcement support. The Sig Sauer P227 is worth looking into while it’s on the market.
