Be Ready to Play
Money is equal to time when it comes to making an album. So, unless you have a big budget to spend on experimenting in the studio, coming prepared will go a long way towards a smoother and cost-effective studio experience.
Have your songs dialed in and you will need fewer takes to get what you’re after. Fewer takes will help you can get more done in less time which can both keep you within your budget and give you some time to experiment with your tracks, which is always fun!
So get is a lot of practice, make sure all your instruments and band members are prepared for the studio time.
Have an idea for each session
Before each studio session, it’s important to form an idea of what you want to accomplish. Some musicians like to have studio sessions one day at a time to help manage their costs while others prefer to book large blocks of time to record the whole EP or album.
Whatever the case may be for you, make sure you have a realistic idea of what you want to get out of each session. If you have a single-day session, for example, you probably won’t be able to finish an entire song if you have multiple instruments that need to be recorded. When you’re in the studio, knowing what you want to have completed within that session will make things run smoother and will make you feel accomplished at the end of your session.
Don’t Expect Too Much From Mixing and Mastering
Many musicians have the misunderstanding that the mixing and mastering stage will completely change how everything sounds. This is true, to a certain degree a great mixing or mastering engineer can make a song sound much better than the rough mix.
But when it comes down to it, they can only work with what they are given. So if you don’t love the way your guitar or any other instrument sounds in the studio, you should fix that become the mixing and mastering process.
