Pool Service Maintenance | 2 More Common Swimming Pool Owner Mistakes

Last week we shared with you three mistakes we commonly see swimming pool owners make that cost them time and money. Here are a couple more:

1. Not running the pool filter long enough. In an effort to save money on their energy bill, many homeowners think they can cut back on their filter’s run time. This means that all the water in the pool is not being drawn into the filter everyday to be cleaned. Over time, solids build up in the water (skin, hair, dirt, lotions, deodorants, etc.) and algae develops.

Also, dangerous bacteria can now be present in your water.
Now, you will have to spend a significant amount of money purchasing algae removal chemicals to clean up the pool. And if you aren’t successful on your own, you may have to pay a professional pool company to do it. Save yourself several hundred dollars and run your filter 4-6 hours in the winter and 6-8 in the summer minimum.

2. Ignoring equipment leaks or strange sounds. If you notice your pool equipment is leaking or the motor is very loud, this is your pool’s way of telling you “I’m sick and need a doctor.” Left unchecked, leaks in your equipment can cause damage beyond repair. If you catch them early and have a professional repair it, it will be a lot expensive than waiting and having to replace the entire system component because the leak was allowed to continue.

Also, loud motors mean they are on their last leg and need to be replaced. They are not running at their peak efficiency, which can cost you a lot of money with your electrical bill. Fix them sooner rather than later and save yourself a ton of money.
