Danville, CA – Why I Don’t Use Fancy Poses or Props in your Newborn Photography

Newborn Photography Session

It’s no secret newborn photography is becoming increasingly popular. Parents love capturing their tiny new bundle of joy.

But try googling newborn photography, and you’ll see many options; posed studio sessions, and in-home lifestyle sessions. How do you decide which is best for you?

I’ll share a secret with you. Early in my photography journey, I thought I wanted to offer posed studio sessions. I learned how to pose newborns in the “froggy” pose, and the “hand under chin” pose. But I wasn’t loving it, and I didn’t know why.

I think it goes back to my first career, which I started as a neonatal ICU nurse.   I cared for the tiniest, sickest infants, and all parents wanted was to hold and cuddle their little ones. So for me, posing infants in unnatural poses using baskets and other props just didn’t feel natural.

I started offering in-home Lifestyle sessions focused on capturing the bond and connection between family members and the newborn. And my heart was happy!

The Art of Newborn Photography

Newborn Photography Session

Newborn photography captures precious memories of a baby’s early life and is an art form that requires creativity, patience, and skill.

As a newborn photographer, I’m comfortable with newborns and understand how to photograph them safely. I understand how to use natural light, and how to use the environment to tell your story.

I also believe in baby-led sessions. That means that I really take my cues from the little one. I expect that there will be a feeding or two, as well as a diaper change, during the session.

Do I Ever Use Props in a Newborn Session

Yes! As I said earlier, I firmly believe that the best place for a newborn is to be held and cuddled in your arms. But I also want your session to tell your story, and sometimes your story does include items that are special to you. We will discuss those things before your session, and I will always do my best to include them in your images.

But let’s focus on the bond between parents, siblings, pets, and baby. Instead of putting the baby in a basket or bucket, let’s put them in your arms – where they feel most safe and secure.

Remember, it is not about what we put around the baby – but who is with the baby and the shared connection.

What Does a Session Look Like Without Props and Poses?

A prop-free, pose-free newborn session is all about documenting authentic, real moments. You might not believe me now, but the tiny moments you’ll miss the most when they are gone….the new baby smell, the tiny fingers, and toes, the little fat rolls, the way they wrinkle their forehead, the little yawns. Those are the things I’ll capture, and you’ll thank me later.
