Take a quick look at the photographs in this article.  They all show emotion and connection between the subjects.  This style of photography is called Lifestyle Photography.  Read on to learn the difference between Lifestyle and Traditional portrait photography.

If you’ve searched for a photographer, you may have come across different terms to describe a photographer’s style; Lifestyle, Traditional, and Documentary.  But what do those terms really mean?  Below I explain 2 popular styles of portrait photography to help you choose the style that is right for you.

Traditional Portrait Photography

Most people are familiar with this style of photography.  Think JCPenney or Olan Mills.

These photographs are usually:

  • Taken in a studio with a backdrop.
  • Posed so everyone is smiling and looking at the camera.
  • Lighting in used so that everyone is well lit and looks their best.

This style of photography has been around for years and is still a popular option.

Lifestyle Portrait Photography

Lifestyle photography is different from traditional portraiture.  Photographs are designed to capture feelings and the connection between  the subjects.

  • Captures people in a natural environment.
  • Sessions are often done outdoors or in a client’s home.
  • Often only natural light is utilized.

While lifestyle photographs are not posed, there is a great deal of direction given.  The photographer may direct a child to jump on the bed or have the kids run up and give the parents a hug.  Often images show subjects looking at each other, rather than at the camera.  Lifestyle photography tends to be emotive and capture genuine interactions between the subjects being photographed.
