Labor Day originated as a day to celebrate the accomplishments of American workers. Many of us work 10-hour days, whether it’s at the office or at home. This becomes beyond stressful. That’s why the Labor the Day weekend is so important to decompress as it’s the last unofficial weekend of summer. Here are some tips for relaxing over the holiday weekend.

Plan ahead for the time off

In order to relax, many people need to plan ahead. This may mean tying up urgent work matters and finishing tasks before leaving on Friday. It may also include making a plan for the following week so they don’t stress about it during the time off.

Relax

Take some time and do nothing, whether it’s binging your favorite TV show, reading a book, or playing some video games. After having everything so scheduled, it’s good to have a little unscheduled fun time.

Exercise

Exercising helps both your mental and physical health so don’t skip your work-outs over the long weekend. However, you can mix it up, such as swimming laps at the pool instead of the gym, if you’re on vacation.

Schedule Time with Family and Friends

Labor Day is the ideal time to spend time with your loved ones. Head to a nearby park and host a Labor Day picnic or BBQ with all of your favorite foods. Make time for a friendly softball game or a beach volley match as well.

Take a weekend trip

Weekend trips have become more popular because they allow you to be more spontaneous and require less stressful planning. It’s much easier to just drive to a resort a few hours away versus booking flights months ahead of time.  It allows you to disconnect from your devices and have fun together as a family.

Recharge your batteries

While it’s fun to spend time with your family and exercise, it’s just as important to schedule some “me,” time. Sleep in on the weekend to regain some energy and schedule some time near the end of the weekend to decompress. It might be the ideal time to meditate, so you’re calm for the week ahead.

It’s important to take a break over the long weekend, and to do activities that you enjoy. If you’re miserable, that unhappiness will spill over into the following work week.
